One of medicine's more frightening diagnoses is a rare disease called F.O.P. Because of a tiny genetic error, sufferers -- mostly children and young adults -- become living statues, immobilized by randomly intertwined ribbons of bone. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania recently discovered the cause, offering hope not just for this terrible malady but for a variety of bone diseases.
