Last January, in the State of Union address, President Bush sought to appease religious conservatives by suggesting that he might support a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. This offended many San Franciscans, including the new (straight) mayor, who instructed the city clerk's office to begin issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
On Valentine's Day, nearly 800 same-sex couples (and soon-to-be class-action plaintiffs) lined up outside City Hall. By the end of the Presidents Day weekend, more than 2400 had gotten married. Here are a few pictures.
